How to Know When You Need New Tires
Tires play a crucial role in the safety and efficiency of your vehicle. It’s important to take good care of your tires and replace them when the time is right. Here are some tips for caring for your tires and knowing when it’s time to replace them.
Keep on Top of Air Pressure Checks
As the temperature changes, the air pressure in your tires will fluctuate. It’s important to check the air pressure in your tires regularly. Here at Ashland Ford Chrysler, we suggest monthly. Incorrect tire pressure can make it more difficult to stop your vehicle and increases your chances of a blowout. If severe, it can make your vehicle harder to handle and cause your tires to wear down much faster than normal. Your Tire Pressure Monitoring System will likely alert you to severe changes in tire pressure, but doing checks on your own is helpful. If you find that your tire pressure is dropping too low too often, it’s probably time for new tires.
Keep Your Tires Rotated and Balanced
We recommend getting your tires rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles generally, but this can vary based on the type of driving you do. The owners’ manual for your vehicle might give you a more precise estimate for when it should be done. Rotating and balancing your tires keeps them wearing evenly and helps them last longer than they otherwise would. Of course, all tires will wear down eventually. We’ll recommend new tires if you need them when you bring your vehicle in to our service center at Ashland Ford Chrysler.
Keep an Eye on Your Tread
When your tires don’t have enough tread, it can become dangerous to drive on the road. We recommend checking your tread monthly to ensure it’s not wearing excessively or unevenly and replacing your tires if the tread gets too low. To check tire tread yourself, a great tip is to use a penny. Insert the penny into the tread groove. If you can see all of Abraham Lincoln’s head, it’s time to get new tires.
